I’m no longer receiving emails when new issues of php|arch are available, I don’t know if I’m dropped from the notification list or Marco is no longer sending these monthly emails. Anyway the latest php|arch magazine november 2005 have been released on the 21, with the cover topic about the latest Oracle and PHP partnership and how it affect PHP developpers.

php|architect magazine on oracle

Recently, there has been a lot of attention paid to the partnership between Zend and Oracle. In this article, author Robert Mark examines the benefits that this partnership offers web developers, and gives practical examples how it could affect you.

The article written by Robert Mark, senior web and database programmer working atMcGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Robert talked about use database caching or data caching, why there was many drivers for Oracle in PHP (PDO vs. OCI and ADODB), Stored Procedures, Functions,Indexes and Views, Virtual Private Database, Managing Multiple Database Names, Large Objects Handling, Strengths and Weaknesses of Oracle in PHP … etc.

In my opinion, Oracle and PHP is an excellent choice for the enterprise and the government. I faced many issues that the articles talked about, but in all cases Oracle is excellent to handle millions of entries in the database in a very complex business architecture requiring very high availability. This is what oracle bring to PHP.

And of course the “what PHP bring to Oracle” is its great features to develop web applications for the internet, intranet and extranet. Application design with Oracle developer have many weakness, specially on the usability of the application. Also today the web applications are taking larger place against the desktop, and I think PHP was the best choice for Oracle to learn from a ten year experience in web application development and make their database web enabled.
