It happen that you have content that rarely change such images, CSS, JavaScripts, … so what about telling the browser to keep them for ever as long as possible ? Visitors will consume less bandwidth and less requests will be generated on your server.


Today Paul Querna released mod_never_expire, an apache module similar to mod_images_never_expire but more configurable. mod_never_expire could be used for any type of files : images, scripts, style sheets … it sets long expire and cache-control headers easily.
The only thing that you have to try is what to do in case some your “never expired” files changes. Change URL, or use something like a mod_expired ? A small solution, but if used properly it could save lots of time and money. I think it’s worth to give it a try.
