Why it’s always Basic that is teached for kids to give them the first steps into computer programming ? Why there is not a PHP for kids, a minimal edition of the scripting langage or probably the same but for desktop. Kids love especially the graphics part of programming, like plot, circle, rect, color …
Since PHP have more functions, a PHP for Kids could be simply an abstraction library providing the basic functions. For example in spite of using the image library and create the image object, then draw line … etc, the PHP for kids have an image object in mind, and as soon as you draw a line it will be displayed on the screen.
Simple and easy, the purpose will be especially educational and in the same time we teach kids something useful, better than Basics and Pascal. Maybe Kids today will be interested more into web programming too, and in that case they’ll find themselves ready to go.
Any volunteers to work on this ?
The idea is great, since I do have a obsession to create PHP for Kids initiatives in Indonesia. It must be fun, persuasive, practical and even their parent will know about PHP 🙂

Put me on that too, but I want a project in Brasilian Portuguese! It would be nice if the project had at least some 4 people, one from each contry, and so we would have more than just one language, what about that?

I know it’s been over a year and a bit since the last post on this topic, but I would be extremely interested.
I have a background in PHP and Cold Fusion, my eight year old is showing an interest but again it all seems to be Basic or some drag and drop based language for kids.

So far I see people want it in different languages,but it will be in english (and other languages too, but it will be available in English) right?

I like this idea and I support that thinking 🙂 since I’m a teacher and I teach the seventh grade and upper I indicate that we can teach our children PHP with ease 🙂 I will explain my experience soon and give it to others to get useful from it 🙂 so we probably work together to reach the main target 😉
