In a blog post on Wednesday, Kaj Arno, MySQL AB’s vice president for community relations, announced that MySQL sources of the enterprise edition will be moved to enterprise server and will be available for paying subscribers only. Changes does not affect the MySQL Community Server.

These changes have been posted to answer the question “How can we better target MySQL Community Server to the community and MySQL Enterprise Server to the paying customers?” posted Kaj. Since the enterprise edition is for paying customers, this move came to provide an additional value for MySQL customers. Now you don’t pay for support only, but for sources also. The enterprise edition remain licensed under GPLv2.

Our intention is for MySQL Community Server to be very good, and for MySQL Enterprise Server to provide further value on top of that

This have been said, the Enterprise edition will have the priority for fixing any bugs, in addition to its Monthly Rapid Updates and Quarterly Service Packs, then bugfixes will be added later to Community Server. Otherwise the implication of the OpenSource community in MySQL will be neglected in favor of paying customers.
In this case I don’t see a reason for keeping MySQL community open, beside being compatible with Linux licenses.
